Our Montessori Environment

Our toddler/preschool environment is prepared within a well-defined space with different materials children can choose to work with. The children work with specially designed Montessori materials where they can manipulate and investigate until they master the lessons inside. We also do a variety of activities that help the children develop language and communication skills, physical coordination, focus, concentration and learning to respect others.

To teach care and respect for the children’s environment, the children participate in dusting, sweeping, watering or spraying plants; cleaning or polishing mirrors; folding or rolling napkins; and most importantly, cleaning up and returning materials to their place.

We use categorized pictures (animals, flowers, birds, vegetables, etc.) and objects to increase vocabulary. We practice self-help skills by giving the children the time they need to dress, wash hands, use the toilet, and eat.

We work on physical coordination through gross motor activities in the playroom such as crawling, carrying balls and hoops, pushing the carts, riding tricycles, climbing, jumping, and balancing. We offer activities that help promote eye-hand coordination and refinement of fine motor skills such as paper cutting, pasting, bead stringing, working with peg boards, play-dough, crayons and hammering.

The children are also exposed to different sensorial and manipulatives that helps their visual, tactile, olfactory, and auditory senses. These include activities such as stacking/nesting toys, small cloth bags containing scents, rough/smooth boards/mystery bag, and music.

Lastly, we stress the value of patience and respect. The children learn the concept of waiting by taking turns. They learn the concept of respect by knowing their own space. For example, if a child is currently using a work mat for his work, then they know that particular mat is a workspace for that child.

Through these activities, children learn to concentrate and focus on their exploration, activities, and interests. Research confirms the importance of learning in the first three years of a child’s life. How and what your children learn during this time affects them throughout their lifetime. In our Montessori toddler home environment, we guide your children into being independent and inquisitive.
